Black mulberry shows potential as a natural anti-acne treatment

Black mulberries (Morus nigra) are known for being rich in antioxidant anthocyanins. A study published in the Pharmacognosy Journal evaluated the potential of black mulberries as an acne treatment based on its antibacterial and antioxidant activity.

  • The researchers macerated black mulberries with ethanol to obtain the fruits’ extract.
  • Using the disk diffusion method, they tested the extract’s effects against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes.
  • They used the DPPH method to assess the extract’s antioxidant activity.
  • The results of the tests revealed a 2.5 percent minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) against S. epidermidis and P. acnes, and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for the respective bacterial species at 2.5 percent and five percent. These confirmed antibacterial activity.
  • Antioxidant tests showed moderate antioxidant activity.

The researchers’ findings confirmed the presence of antibacterial and antioxidant activity in black mulberries.
